Big oil and gas companies learned decades ago that their products would fuel climate change. Instead of doing what they could to mitigate what they knew to be a potentially “catastrophic” crisis, they pivoted to a decades-long campaign of doubt, denial, and disinformation in order to delay climate action and protect their profits. Even as they prepared their own operations and infrastructure for rising temperatures and sea levels, the fossil fuel industry deliberately misled the public, policymakers, and the media about the danger of burning fossil fuels. These companies have made trillions of dollars from the products that cause climate change and they continue to delay and block climate action to this day.
As the local harms caused by climate change become more frequent and more severe, communities across the country are facing staggering costs associated with recovery, adaptation, and resilience. Taxpayers are footing a multibillion-dollar bill to protect their homes, families, jobs, economies, infrastructure, and public health from heatwaves, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other climate-driven disasters. These costs often fall hardest on our most vulnerable communities. With more exposure to air pollution, heat waves, flooding, and unsafe drinking water, environmental justice communities — in particular low-income communities and communities of color — are uniquely impacted by climate change and the pollution that causes it.
This is a familiar story. Just like Big Tobacco, just like the opioid manufacturers — when companies lie about the danger of their products, they must be held accountable for the resulting damages.
